What is a CNC lathe and how does it differ from a manual (universal) lathe?

04 April 2026

A CNC lathe is a computer-controlled machine used to shape materials like metal or plastic. As the part rotates, cutting tools move according to specified G-code commands. Unlike manual lathes, repeatable, precise operations can be performed without the need for manual intervention by the operator. A CNC lathe with a C-axis allows for controlled rotation of the spindle, enabling milling, drilling, or engraving operations on the part's surface – operations that are not possible with a manual lathe.
